Josefina Aguilar Josefina's skill began to be noticed when she was quite young, and by the time she was in her early twenties, articles about her work began to appear in European and North American journals. In 1985, she and her husband José (who does some of the painting) traveled to the US. Since then, interest in her work has continued to grow, as has her stature as a major artist in ceramics.
Although Josefina is celebrated as a master in Oaxaca and beyond, it is definitely a family affair! Her mother Dona Isaura Alcantara Diaz sold her craftwork directly to Nelson Rockefeller and other high-profile collectors. Dona Isaura's daughters, first Guillermina, then Josefina, and their younger siblings Irene and Concepcion, each acquired mastery in the medium. Their works are now sought by art lovers everywhere. However Josefina may be foremost among Dona Isaura's daughters, due perhaps to picking up the skill at such an early age, and working under Dona Isaura for 7 years, before her mother's early passing.
As always, our selection exceeds what we can show here, and particularly so for Josefina. If you have a request for your collection or for your Christmas shopping, please call or e-mail and we will do our best to service your needs. Click on images to view larger size. |
