Luis Pablo, 33 years old, is one of the shining stars of the newest generation of Oaxacan animalists. Gifted, he has quickly emerged as one of the most sought after of today's artisanas, and he has already shown his work in Mexico City's Museo folklorico.

Luis Pablo

Luis's carving style is very sophisticated, using a precise planing technique and inventive limb formation to represent the strength, movement and activity of his animals. While his painting style and technique are more in the traditional Oaxacan flavor, his color combinations are daring and delightful. Luis mixes his own acrylic paints, and the finish on his animals tends to be either extremely matte or very shiny.

His treatment of the eyes is deceptively simple, but he creates the illusion that his animals are always watching you. Who can resist grinning at Froggy with his midnight snack, or a smiley red & purple Lobster, with a mouth full of shiny white teeth?

We have many more pieces of Luis Pablo's work than we can show here. Each work is unique and as always we guarantee their authenticity. We specialize in Luis's larger pieces, which are surprisingly affordable, given his artistic stature.

We have seen Luis grow in his accomplishments over the years, and we know he is the genuine article. He has that un-namable something, a "je ne sais quoi" which places him at the very top tier of Oaxacan animalistas, past or present: he is an artistic genius.

So who do you prefer: the Genius, or the Giant? E-mail me with your reflections.
