Oscar Carrillo Oscar is one of the 5 great iguana carvers of present day Oaxacan art. His rivals (and friends) are Luis Pablo (unsurpassed in innovation and texturization), Mario Castellanos (the undisputed champion of the tail's swirling grace), and the brothers Felipe & Mauricio Ramirez (masters of innovation in design). The latter two are actually the cousins of Mario, and are related by marriage to Oscar! It's a small but brilliant world of artists!
Oscar's great strengths are his vivid color combinations, and his sure hand in painting. While his carving style is strong and steady, his painting distinguishes him from his fellow artists.
Oscar's lizards are comparatively easy to spot, as the faces all seem to have "a family air" about them. He is also considered to be the most affordable of the 5 major iguana makers. Click on images to view larger size. |
